Roy Stanley Allman, 97, Huntsville ON, passed away peacefully at the IOOF Long Term Care Home in Barrie on October 13, 2024. Family were by his side.
Roy was born in Toronto ON on March 21, 1927. He was the son of the late Stanley and Clare Allman.
Roy's father Stanley, attempted to drive his family to see the Dionne Quintuplets in North Bay. Due to several mechanical mishaps on their way, they ended up instead at Kawagama "Hollow" Lake in Dorset. It was here that the family built their first cottage. This began Roy's lifelong love of Hollow Lake and where he met the love of his life, Marjorie Russell. Roy and Marjorie were married on February 24, 1951. They raised a family of two sons and two daughters in Richmond Hill ON.
Roy worked as a machinist and eventually a foreman at General Electric in Toronto for 19 years. In the mid 1960s he made a career change and became a teacher. He taught machine and sheet metal shop at Don Head Secondary School in Richmond Hill for the next 10 years.
In 1973, he and Marjorie moved to Huntsville. Roy did contract work for Bob Dickson at Kimberly - Clark. An interest in woodworking led to another rewarding career of canoe building which he continued until he was in his mid-eighties.
Roy was predeceased by his mother and father, his wife Marjorie, brother Bob, sister Margie and grandson Dustin. He is survived by his sister Pat, his children Don (Marion), Judith (Stan), Russell (Brenda) and Elizabeth (Paul). He is also survived by 10 grandchildren as well as great-grandchildren. Roy is fondly remembered by his close friend Jack Hurley, a fellow canoe builder from Dwight. ON.
Roy was a renaissance man in the true sense, his skills ranged from building houses, boats and snow mobiles. If he didn't know something he would learn how to do it.
Roy has donated his body to science at the University of Ottawa. There will be no funeral service however a Celebration of Life may be held at a later date.
We wish to thank the many caregivers who looked after Roy in his final years. His daughter Elizabeth lived with and cared for him for the two years prior to him going into Long Term Care. Closing the Gap Nurses and PSWs attended to him as well while he was living at home for those years. The last year and a half of his life, he was in the care of the staff of the IOOF Home in Barrie On. We greatly appreciate the kindness and the compassion of all his caregivers.
We are grateful for the long life Roy lived and the great memories he leaves behind.
