Peter Veltman went home to be with his Lord and Saviour on Tuesday, November 26, 2024 at a hospice in Huntsville. He passed away peacefully with the hands of his loved ones on him. Peter was a devoted husband to his wife and partner of 65 years, Coby Veltman; loving father to his children Gerald (Linda), Dave (Chrissy), Jim (Teresa), John (Trish), and Diane (Mike); cherished Grandpa to Peter (Katie), Daryl (Lindsey), Adrienne (Alex), Kelsey, Adam, Lauren, Alexa, Kristopher, Amber, Britney, and Sara; and adoring Opa to his great- grandchildren Gerald, Jaxon, Henley, Maggie, Bodhi, Teagan, and Joey.
Peter started his life on January 1, 1937, in Harlingen, The Netherlands. In 1953, at the age of 16, he immigrated to Canada along with his parents and three siblings: Steinie, Ena, and Jerry. He worked hard to help his family make a start in their new country. Shortly after, Coby DeGroot caught his eye and together, they became an unstoppable team. They made Brampton, Ontario their home where they raised their 5 children. Peter’s hard work ethic was on display in different jobs as a truck driver, an owner of a janitorial business and later, as a real estate agent. Clients appreciated his calm negotiating skills.
After he retired, Peter and Coby moved to Huntsville to manage a bed and breakfast, the “Algonquin Retreat”. Many international guests were treated to their Dutch hospitality. Peter’s passions included watching all his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports. He tried to never miss a game, whether in person, or streamed on TV. He enjoyed playing shuffleboard at Faith Baptist Church and at the 55+ club of Huntsville. Playing billiards with friends at the local community centre was another favourite activity. Peter was a dedicated church member who sang his heart out at church, in a choir and at home.
He led the Veltman household with love, laughter, and teasing that satisfied the family’s competitive nature. Although he was a man of few words, his demeanor spoke volumes. He showed unconditional love, generosity and acceptance to all people who crossed his path. Dad’s faith shone through right to the very end. It brings us comfort to know that he is now singing with the angels.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at 3PM at Faith Baptist Church,169 West Road, Huntsville, Ontario.
