Patricia Rundle, née Range
September 29, 1944 – September 9, 2021
On Thursday, September 9, 2021, Patricia “Pat” Rundle passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the Algonquin Grace Hospice following a short but furious fight with cancer. True to form, Pat turned this into an adventure full of twists and turns. Pat died the way she lived, befriending health care workers and fellow cancer patients along the way, and stubbornly refusing to leave the party until she had given cancer a black eye.
Pat was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on September 29, 1944 under mysterious circumstances which culminated in her adoption by George and Gertrude Range. Her early years were spent in Winnipeg and Swan River, Manitoba and London, Ontario. She was a reluctant only child and always wished she had grown up with a sibling. Pat was a self-described “Tomboy” despite her mother’s attempts to feminize her by way of enrollment in a Simpson’s Modelling and Self-Improvement Course. Fortunately for everyone, Pat’s true nature won out and she was able to live life on her terms.
Pat graduated from Teacher’s College in London and had a brief teaching career. A love of horses led to her marriage to Robert Rundle in 1963. A daughter Heather was born in 1964 followed by a very surprising addition of twins, Thomas and Michelle, on her birthday in 1966. Pat’s talents as a skilled seamstress, knitter, cabinet maker, horsewoman, hockey player, coach, mechanic, golfer, skier, curler and anything else she put her mind to, made her an incredible role model to her three children. Pat ensured they were raised to be independent and unfettered by traditional gender norms.
With children grown, Pat returned to school and got a mechanical drafting diploma. She then embarked on a career as a mechanical maintainer at Ontario Hydro in 1988. This led to the second chapter of Pat’s adventures. She met and began a life with Gerald “Gerry” Bevan, welcoming into the fold his three children, Jerry Jr, Angela and Ian. Pat and Gerry belonged to the Nanticoke Golf Club, now called The Greens at Renton, where they have been long time members.
The nineties saw the birth of several grandchildren for Pat and Gerry. It also brought with it the sad loss of Pat’s son Thomas following his own battle with cancer. Pat’s step-children say she was the glue that bound them while they had children and moved out across the country to the West Coast.
Pat added downhill skiing to her repertoire and later upped her game by joining the Chicopee Adult House League Alpine Race Team and Chicopee-Alpine Masters. She represented Canada in Innsbruck at the 2020 World’s Masters and raced in the US Masters. Pat also represented Ontario in the 55 and Over Canada Summer Games for golf competing in New Brunswick and Alberta. These are but a few of Pat’s achievements as she was also involved in coaching, volunteering, cycling for charity, kayaking and too many more to list.
Laughter followed Pat as she was always the life of the party. She lived life to the fullest, while lending a helping hand to anyone in need. Even in her passing, Pat’s legacy and endearing personality brought her children, step-children and grand-children closer together. This unique quality to inspire had them united at her bedside to see her off on her final adventure, where no doubt there will be plenty of laughter.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Pat’s name to sickkidsfoundation.com or hospicehuntsville.com. A Celebration of Life will be held at The Greens at Renton in Simcoe, Ontario on Thursday, September 16, 2021 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, with words being shared at 2:30 pm.
