Passed away peacefully at Huntsville District Memorial Hospital on February 25, 2024 in her 101st year. Nitetis was born in Huntsville to parents Victor and Gertrude (nee Reid) Thornton. She is predeceased by her beloved husband of 65 years Mervin Austin, married May 24, 1947. Dear sister of Jim Thornton and sister-in-law of Kirby and Marjorie Austin and Roma and Howard Maw. Remembered by her nieces and nephews; Barry Austin, the late Dianne Austin, Kevin (Nora) Austin, Greg (Carmen) Austin, Shauna Sturgeon, Byron (Patricia) Maw, Julie (Wayne) Shelly, and Brady (Jaci) Maw. Nitetis was deeply cherished by her close circle of friends especially Pat Briggs and Susan and Rob Hughes.
During her working years, Nitetis was the bookkeeper for her husband, Mervin’s business. She also worked for the Department of Highways in Huntsville for many years. She loved life and had many hobbies including nature photography and traveling with Mervin to many different locations including Alaska, Western Canada, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico to name a few. Nitetis was a gifted pianist, having completed her Grade 8 level exams, and enjoyed playing at her church.
Nitetis was thankful for having lived a life of good health and happiness.
A visitation will be held at Billingsley Funeral Home, 430 Ravenscliffe Road, on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. A funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. with a reception to follow.
Memorial donations can be made to Huntsville Hospice or Andy’s House Hospice.
