Lyla passed away at home with family by her side on Monday, February 7, 2022, just shy of her 91st birthday.  Lyla was born in Huntsville on February 11, 1931, to parents Clarence and Winnie (nee Tryon) Smith. Lyla married Edward Storey in 1961 in Huntsville and had 49 years with him before his passing in 2010.  She will be dearly missed by her children Brett (Cathy) Storey and Gail (Carl) Terreberry, and her cherished grandchildren Pamela Terreberry, Dana Terreberry and Sarah Storey.  Lyla was predeceased by her parents Clarence (1975) and Winnie (1990) and by infant brothers Harold (1929) and Theodore (1930).

Lyla spent her childhood in Etwell where she attended S.S. No. 4 school which is now at Huntsville Heritage Place. She graduated from Huntsville High School in 1948 then attended business school in Toronto.  After raising Brett and Gail in Downsview, she returned to the workforce as a legal secretary for Gulf Canada and then Metropolitan Life. She retired in 1993 back to Huntsville.

Lyla was an avid bowler both in Toronto and Huntsville. She loved getting together with friends to play cards. In her younger years, Lyla and the family were often camping.  She loved spending time by the pool or lakeside relaxing and enjoying a swim. She travelled to many Caribbean locations and Mexico over the years to escape the cold winter weather.  Lyla loved cats and always had one or more in her care. More recently she liked watching her shows on TV, especially Jeopardy, doing crossword puzzles and chatting with friends on the phone.

We take comfort knowing that now she’s back playing cards with her lifelong friend Verna. We miss you and we love you mom and grandma.

The family invites friends to a visitation scheduled on Saturday, February 19th, 2022 at Billingsley Funeral Home, Huntsville from 1 p.m. until time of service in the chapel at 2 p.m.  As an expression of sympathy and in lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to to Hospice Huntsville or Huntsville Hospital Foundation.  Messages of condolence can be left at www.billingsleyfuneralhome.com
