Joyce (Seymour) Irving

Irving, Joyce Louise (Seymour) July 30, 1933 to June 3, 2018 Joyce Irving of Huntsville passed away peacefully at Algonquin Grace Hospice just two months shy of her 85th birthday. Left to mourn her passing are her children and families: Brenda (Glen deceased) Hammond, Nancy & Roger Irving, Susan & Steve Low, Lorrie & Phillip Lamb, and Tom & Vikky Irving. Joyce had 12 grandchildren, Darrin (Doreen) Hammond, Sabrina (Jason O'Brien) Hammond, Mark (Melissa) Booth, Keith (Amanda) Watts, Ashley Watts, Jennifer (Chris) Low, Daniel (Jamie) Low, Jeremy (Sarah) Lamb, Jason (Fran) Lamb, David (Kelsey) Lamb, Matthew (Stephanie) Lamb, and Aurora Irving. Joyce had 16 great grandchildren: Taylor (Meagan) Hummel, Lily O'Brien, Kayla (Jordan) Beckett, Kelsey (Sam Julian) Smith, Chantal Watts, Alexander Watts, Melody Fotheringham, Jonathon Low, Lloyd Lamb, Sonya Lamb, Jason Lamb, Joel Lamb, Nate Lamb, Rebecca Lamb, Jack Lamb, Johnny Lamb and 4 great-great grandchildren: Avery and Jackson Hummel, Rivers & Eden Beckett. She is survived by her sister Freda (d. Keith) Kingshott and brother Michael (Joy) Seymour. Joyce was predeceased by her infant daughter Linda, her parents Fred and Elsie Seymour of Baysville and siblings Grace (d. Adrian) van Seters, Barbara (d. Donald) Hammond, and Betty-Ann (d. Ron) McQuaid. Joyce was born and raised in Brunel Township at Newholm, where her dad had a sawmill. She married Thomas Irving Sr (d. 2000) and they raised their children across from the mill. Newholm was a thriving community in the early years, with a dance hall, a post office, and a church. Years later the mill property was sold to Roy Hewgill, the post office and the dance hall were closed, and Three Star Lumber Company opened just a little further down the road. Time marches on and it too has ceased operations. Mom was taken aback when the Anglican diocese decommissioned the Holy Trinity Newholm church and allowed it to be desecrated. That was a bee in her bonnet for sure. A lot of memories were made at that church. Joyce had a strong work ethic and spent many years as a laundress at Huntsville Hospital. In her early years she worked at Boleys Bakery in Huntsville and Camp New Moon in Baysville. She loved to read and spent many hours knitting and crocheting, and she had a real passion for quilting and sewing. Many people have received the fruits of her labour, as she really enjoyed making quilts as wedding and baby gifts. She earned many ribbons for her quilts at the Stisted Fair. Joyce loved to bake, and her pecan pies were second to none and in season she loved to make jams, jellies, and salsa. She had fun every spring going to Peter Brooks' Sugarbush to help him make maple syrup. She enjoyed belonging to the Community Seniors Group that meets every week at the Aspdin Hall. She relished the camaraderie with the rest of the group and helping them with their many charity endeavours. Joyce was a hard-working woman, a loyal friend, a faithful companion and a loving mom. Her life was well-lived. She made the in-between years count, and was never shy to lend a hand to anyone who needed it. She will be sadly missed. Joyce has been cremated and we invite friends to help celebrate her life on June 30th at Billingsley Funeral Home. We will have visitation at 1, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. with a luncheon and social time to follow. Reverend Peter Simmons will be officiating the service for us.
