STEPHENS, Donna Janet
June 23, 1942 – August 28, 2021
Beautiful Donna Janet Stephens (nee Scott) passed away peacefully on August 28th 2021 at the age of 79. She was the beloved wife of Barry for 56 years and is survived by her children Leanne Damas (Alex) and Keri Burgess (Jordan), all of Ottawa. Fondly remembered by her four grandchildren, Talia and Jackson Damas & Owen and Rhys Burgess. Loving sister of Lynda MacMahon (David) of Mexico. Predeceased by her parents Charles and Norma of Leaside.
Donna attended Northlea Public School and Leaside High School. She earned her BA and MA in psychology from the University of Toronto, after which she worked as a school psychologist for the Toronto Board of Education. She continued her love of learning by earning a diploma as a Library and Information Technician when her children were teenagers.
Donna spent many years taking Lea and Keri to swimming practices both morning and afternoon. She always had a dog and loved to walk. As decades long subscribers to Toronto theatre, Donna and Barry enjoyed many excellent productions. In her senior years, she developed a passion for Tai Chi. Travel was always important to Donna. She enjoyed trips all over the world with Barry, family and friends, learning extensively about each place she visited. Some of her favourites were Europe (on a number of occasions), South Africa and Vietnam. After each trip she created a history and photo album to help remember the special time.
Retirement at the cottage on Lake of Bays allowed for a true gathering place. It was the perfect location for family holidays in all seasons. She treated her family and friends to wonderful meals, setting the bar very high. “It’s not as good as Grandma’s” is a frequent refrain. Reading, particularly non-fiction, correcting our grammar and gardening remained favourite activities. Donna had a special knack for picking the perfect card for every occasion.
A celebration of Donna’s life will follow at a later date. Donations in memory of Donna may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
She was much loved and will be greatly missed.
