On Monday, April 15th, 2019, Carolyn Rushton, loving daughter, mother, sister and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 74, holding her daughter's hand, at Muskoka Landing in Huntsville, Ontario.
Carolyn was born on September 14th, 1944, in Truro, Nova Scotia, to Lloyd and Dorothy (nee Millen) Rushton. She was the second of five children. At a young age, the family moved from Truro to Brantford, Ontario where Carolyn helped raise her two younger sisters and brother.
After graduating from Pauline Johnson High School in Brantford, Carolyn worked for a couple years in Ottawa, Ontario before moving to Frobisher Bay, Northwest Territories where she gave birth to her daughter, Michelline. She returned to Ontario in 1975 and settled in Huntsville, where she started her career working for the Ministry of Natural Resources a few years later. She worked for the MNR for over 25 years, in the Huntsville, Pembroke and North Bay office. She retired in 2006. Unfortunately, her retirement was plagued by poor health and she was not able to fully enjoy the free time she so richly deserved.
Those who met Carolyn all agree she was one who would put others' needs before her own. There is not one specific thing she would do; she would help each person as their needs arose and do what she could. Each person has their own story of how Carolyn touched their life.
In 2009, due to declining health, Carolyn required more one on one care and moved from her home in North Bay to Muskoka Landing in Huntsville. This did not stop her from looking out for others. She actively participated in resident councils at Muskoka Landing, advocating for other residents. She also kept herself busy by volunteering at the home, greeting guests and helping at events. She most enjoyed attending classes when crafts or baking were done. She created many friends during her time there and they will miss her greatly.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her father (Lloyd) and her mother (Dorothy). She is survived by her daughter Michelline (William), her two brothers Arnold (Carol) and Brian (Shirley) and two sisters Brenda and Marilyn, along with five nephews and one niece.
As per Carolyn's wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 25th, 2019 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Billingsley Funeral Home, 430 Ravenscliffe Road, Huntsville. A memorial service will take place at 1:00 p.m. with a reception to follow.
Donations may be sent to Coast to Coast Against Cancer and the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.
